Residual Energy
Limestone
Dimensions variable
Limestone, the sedimentary rock is known to retain what some believe to be residual energy, also known as psychic residue. Many people believe that emotionally charged events leave an imprint or energy residue on the physical objects nearby. What distinguishes residual energy from an active haunting is that the energy/impressions repeat consistently, as if on a recorded loop. The energy levels may increase or decrease, but the content remains the same with each manifestation. By contrast, in what we term an active haunting, a ghost may respond to environmental stimuli and direct contact.

On a formal level, historical and contemporary culture use a free standing stone as a symbol. People use a gravestone to mark, recognize or honor the dead. Various cultures use large stones as monuments to represent numerous topics of public interest. Some monumental stone sculptures honor great leaders in politics and religion, while others represent a mathematical calendar used for harvesting crops. Which ever purpose a society uses stone for, in all societies it is viewed as a material of strength and natural beauty.

A monumental block of limestone extracted from a location with paranormal history is placed within the context of an art museum or cultural/history institution. The visitor is confronted with a static physical artifact and all of the senses contained within the presence of the object. The visitor is allowed to experience the artifact and interact with the limestone on a sensory level.

Psychological elements become a part of the conceptual framework. The visitor becomes engaged in the history of the object and remains overwhelmed by the large scale natural aesthetics of the limestone. Human imagination is allowed freedom and the mind/body might begin to experience voices or feel a presence. The space may become cold and a visitor's body may feel sudden anxiety. Paranormal phenomena is put into question. Does the limestone hold residual energy or imprints of past individuals once in contact with its surface or does human imagination take over the mind/body and lead us into a world of fantasy? Do our spiritual dreams become an escape from the reality of morality and the human condition?

In the realization of death, the human species develops self-defense mechanisms that protect us not only from ourselves, but also from nature itself. This project examines the principles of human psychology through a historical paranormal artifact while also posing questions about dreams, reality, and self-mortality.
