The Camera Obscura Vehicle (C.O.V.) is a transit machine integrated with the scientific and art historical spatial tool of the realistic projected image. The vehicle consists of a small moving truck and a pinhole aperture in the side allowing outside natural light to flood the light tight dark space within. This interactive tool welcomes the public observers inside the space to experience the natural light phenomenon occurring. Light pouring from the aperture projects an inverted upside down image of the outside environment onto the inner surrounding walls of the truck.
The Camera Obscura Vehicle acts as a mobile educational outreach tool for art museums, cultural/science centers, colleges, and other organizations of art, photography and new media related interests. The experiential project engages the senses of the participants while also informing them of the art historical and cultural significance of the camera obscura. Studying the effects of optics and the ability of human perception in the natural environment through use of basic ready-made technological tools creates a variety of scientific references and topics of discussion. Through direct interaction with the subject matter and history of the camera, communities can be inspired to research, explore, and experiment with the truck. This type of investigation also encourages various activities to be developed in relation to the subject, such as providing different lens, various sized apertures, and creating different color compositions. Creating a physical print photograph can also be tested. In this respect, the Camera Obscura Vehicle acts as an interactive/educational creative laboratory dedicated to spatial research and sensory phenomena.
Educators are encouraged to develop a curriculum around the mobile camera obscura. Thus allowing the tool to be experienced and comprehended in conjunction with an art historical/science based lesson plan with a hands-on accessible element. The unpresumptuous mobile truck will no doubt alter the communitys perceptions of reality, which will stimulate further creative communication and expand the interpretation of the artwork.
All voyages and destinations will be documented with digital video and images. With proper funding and support a website will be created with a blog interface presenting continuous posts of the progress of the project, including: upcoming and past travel dates and destinations, updated video/image footage of community interaction as well as short interviews with participants explaining their experiences and/or descriptions and interpretations of the artwork.
