Project: Firefly Phase III: Assembly of Installation
2008
Wall, painted steel panels, magnetic acrylic jars, and living fireflies (bioluminescent light)
7’h. x 8’w.
On the summer evening of Wednesday, July 9, 2008 a team of participants came together at the Foundry Art Centre and then embarked on a journey together along the Missouri riverbank in Frontier Park in search of fireflies. Armed with insect nets and clear plastic jars, participants captured as many fireflies as they could in hopes of filling each jar provided for them. Once back inside the Foundry, participants placed each jar with a magnetic top onto a large 7’ x 8’ steel panel in a grid format creating a wall of bioluminescent (living) light. Using the light as a method of communication, once on the wall, the fireflies often flashed in perfect unison.

Milk & cookies were served to participants of the project after the installation process. Participants were encouraged to discuss the significance and purpose of their interaction with the project while enjoying the sensuous experience of the installation. The final action in the project was to gather all of the jars and release the fireflies back into nature.
