Assumptions and Contradictions

Halogen lamps, red, green, and blue dichroic filters, and two stairwells
Dimensions variable
Assumptions and Contradictions was a collaborative project with artist Destiny Vinley that examined the theoretical and interactive properties of light. A total of six lights equipped with dichroic filters were installed in two stairwells. The visitor was invited to choose a path and although the stairwells led to the same place, each stairwell possessed very different light properties in accordance to the architecture. The color palette chosen was red, green, and blue, best known as the primary colors of light (RGB). Theoretically in optics, when the three of these primary light sources are combined it produces pure white light. A tri-colored shadow of the “self” was projected on the wall as a viewer passed the lights. Differing from a typical shadow, a viewer was confronted with various color patterns and encouraged to interact with the projected light. As a result of the visual exploration the place of self-discovery and self-expression became a place of social interaction. Viewers played together and developed unique visual patterns through collaborative bodily movements.
