ALEX ELMESTAD: spatial research + sensory design
Binary Phenomena

Stones, sand, wood, motion sensor lights, omnidirectional microphone, 5 channel audio, heating pads, cooling fans, olfactory diffuser, mint, and burnt pine
Dimensions variable
Located in a black void of a space, lights of color respond to movement of a viewer and illuminate an arrangement of stones. A warm and cool light merge in the middle as a chorused “OM” resonates throughout the space. Another channel of audio mimics the “OM” but in reverse. While a faint and slowed tone of crackling heat arises from the warm light, a sluggish sound of liquid submersion drowns the warm audio. The rich scent of burnt pine mixed with aroma of cool mint lingers in the air. Each stone sitting about the level a hand falls from an individual’s body possesses a varied heat depending upon the proximity of the warm or cool lights. When a visitor makes a noise either by moving, talking, or interacting with the stones, a microphone channels the audio through an electronic filter that disperses echoed sounds to four speakers located in the corners of the room. The visually dark space combined with a delayed soundscape of echoes creates the illusion of infinity. A duality exists on a sonic, visual, tactile, and olfactory level. The concept of duality also extends beyond a sensory level and an elemental relationship is formed between the viewer and their surroundings.
